William Ede-Smith

William Ede-Smith is a multi-disciplinary artist specialising in landscape painting and abstract sculpture.

Originally from Sussex, he spent a decade in Holland before returning to England in 2019, settling in Eastbourne. His paintings explore the transient nature of landscapes, where horizons feel uncertain. Subtle hints of structures or distant bothies suggest a quiet search, evoking the sensation of a long solitary walk.

In contrast, his sculptural work serves as a tangible marker of presence: “I’m here.” Influenced by his experiences as an autistic person, his sculptures, often in the form of standing stones, emphasize material choice, tactility, and scale—he is currently working on person-sized pieces. Viewers are encouraged to (carefully) handle his work, engaging with its physicality.
